Messy first attempt at a concept sketch for nobrow 7 piece. I started drawing a finished version of this, but later abandoned because I didn’t like how the overall shapes of the characters weren’t strong enough (hours of graphite disco a-wasted). Also there were certain shapes that didn’t play nice. And the face-characters were a bit, um, shit.
In the midst of Kusama fever, the wait to see her Fireflies on the Water at the Whitney was understandably long, which is a shame, since it’d do the restrospective, which consists namely of paintings and lacks a full-blown environment in its upstairs floors, justice.
The artist Michael Zelehoski takes three dimensional objects from police barricades to picnic tables and transforms them into 2-d abstractions. In this work called National Gridlock up at DODGE Gallery in the Lower East Side of NYC, he takes on the dreaded construction barrier. This work was my only solace after spending an hour stuck on a closed down LIE this past sunday. This piece should be called NYC Gridlock!
